Obstacle Detection – the Savior at Night
Flying at night is always a challenge. Fatigue, distraction, and a high adrenaline level are not a good combination. Imagine being alerted to a search for a missing person. A child is missing, 8 years old, not found for over 5 hours. You drive to the scene, begin setting up, and prepare the flight. The operation is going well — but then it’s there. Hard to see on the camera even with a spotlight — the high-voltage power line. It was overlooked during planning, communication was lacking, or something similar. This is exactly where the new LiDAR obstacle detection of the DJI Matrice 400 shows its strengths. It reliably warns of cables down to a thickness of 12 millimeters and displays them on the screen.
Of course, technology does not replace the pilot’s attentiveness, but it provides a good level of additional safety, especially in stressful situations where every mistake can be costly.
Battery Handling – Small Things, Big Impact
Another detail that stands out as particularly pleasant in daily use is battery handling. By reducing from two batteries to just one, and by adding a carrying handle, the battery can now be transported much more comfortably. It sounds trivial, but it makes a huge difference in rough terrain or cold conditions. We have already heard from customers that during a battery change on the Matrice 350 RTK, a battery slipped out of their hand and damaged the drone’s cover. As a result, the operation had to be terminated prematurely, as safe continued flight was no longer possible due to the lack of IP protection.
Radio Range – Finally More Stable
A long-known problem: just a few hundred meters over the forest, and the radio connection drops. This can quickly make an operation annoying, critical, or even impossible.
With the Sub2G antenna, the DJI Matrice 400 is fundamentally much more stable, which already avoids a lot of frustration. It becomes really exciting with the relay function. However, this requires either two drones (DJI Matrice 4(T)D or 400) or the D-RTK 3 module. One drone acts as the relay, the other as the working drone. If the connection between the working drone and its remote controller weakens, the relay drone picks up the signal from the remote controller and forwards it to the working drone. This allows the height difference between trees and the remote controller to be overcome very effectively. If the relay drone is positioned above the forest, the working drone can be flown as if the forest were not there.
