Further development of the SORA approach
SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment) is the central risk assessment procedure for so-called ‘Specific Category’ drone operations.
With SORA 2.5, this procedure has been further developed and incorporated into the European regulatory framework as an updated AMC/GM structure. This does not abolish the previous SORA logic (SORA 2.0), but rather methodologically updates and refines it.
Context regarding the previous SORA 2.0 version
As things stand, SORA 2.5 represents the authoritative further development of the assessment approach. In practical terms, this means that new applications for authorisation under the ‘Specific Category’ are expected to be assessed in accordance with the updated SORA logic.
Important: A blanket statement that SORA 2.0 is ‘no longer valid’ or that no further applications are possible is not correct as such. In practice, regulatory transitions in European aviation law generally take place gradually and with due regard to national implementation and transitional provisions; consequently, new applications under SORA 2.0 are no longer possible.
Improvements in the new Easy Access version
The new online version of the Easy Access Rules offers additional technical and functional improvements:
- optimised performance for faster navigation
- direct links from individual articles to current and amended versions
- improved filter and search functions
- clearer structuring of regulatory content
This significantly simplifies access to the complex UAS regulations, particularly for users in operational roles and for authorising authorities.
