If I have successfully completed the STS-T exam, how long do I have to take the STS-P before the STS-T expires?
The STS-T, like other licenses, is valid for 5 years. The STS-P can be taken at any time. It is only important to renew the STS-T every 5 years.
Does extending the A2 license also extend A1/A3?
Yes. The highest license always applies.
Do BOS participants need to take an STS? Is it useful?
Must – NO / Recommended – YES. It is definitely advisable that at least the leadership personnel hold an STS-T. Currently, EGRED 2.0 is only a recommendation that BOS pilots should have completed an A2 and a BOS training. However, we expect this requirement to be revised soon and STS to be added as another recommendation.
How can I find out if my drone is certified C3, C5, or C6?
The certification must be displayed on the drone. It is often found on the arms of the drone.
To certify a C3 drone as C5 or C6, suitable accessories such as a Flight Termination System (FTS) or parachute must be installed. These accessories are marked with C5 or C6, which then applies to the entire system.
Which drones now have C5 or C6 certification?
The DJI M4D / M4TD has a C6 certification, but only for dock operation. In stand-alone mode, the drone is certified C2.
Do I need the STS certificate to obtain a general permit, or is the A2 sufficient at the current time?
Currently, the A2 is sufficient.
Can I already extend the A2 license even if the drone license only expires in 6/2027?
Of course, the extension applies from the date of passing the exam. This means the license would currently be extended until 10/2030 – not until 06/2032.
If I have fully completed the STS certificate, does it also expire after 5 years? And will there be a refresh for it?
Yes, the STS license also expires after 5 years, but only the theory. This must be renewed every 5 years. The STS-P is exempt. Yes, a refresh will also be offered for this.
Is the A2 license a requirement for entering geographic zones?
No, it is not. However, the A2 license allows you to fly closer to uninvolved persons as well as residential and industrial areas with C2 drones. Flying with A1/A3 is possible – in A1 only under the applicable restrictions, and in A3 only at a large distance from uninvolved persons (also for C2 drones, as without the appropriate license the operation automatically falls under A3).
When should I purchase the course, and when should I do the refresher?
The refresher by the LBA is a matter of 1–2 days. Afterward, the extension appears in the LBA dashboard.
The further validity starts from the moment the A2 refresher is confirmed.
Example:
Recommendation: refresher 1 month before the A2 license expires – this does not affect the purchase of the training. It can be purchased in advance and is valid as a ticket for 1 year – longer upon request.
