European Scenarios STS 01 and STS 02 - FAQ

The European Standard Scenarios STS 01 and STS 02 in the Specific Category will come into force on January 1st. We have collected questions received by us and provide answers with the latest information:

In this article, you will learn:

1. What STS-01 and STS-02 are (predefined EU scenarios in the Specific Category).
2. The difference: STS-01 = VLOS (C5, up to 25 kg, also urban) vs. STS-02 = BVLOS (C6, unpopulated; 1 km / 2 km with observer).
3. Which approvals are no longer required (no individual approval per flight; save months of waiting time).
4. Which training is necessary (theory online + practical on-site; modules independent).
5. That A1/A3 is sufficient (A2 not needed; is covered by STS if not held).
6. That only C5/C6 drones are permitted in STS; otherwise OPEN or individual approval (OM + SORA/PDRA at the LBA).
7. Where to find the EASA list of C5/C6 UAS (continuously updated).
8. Added value of the STS license (EU-wide recognized; proof of competence up to SAIL III helpful for individual applications).
9. What you receive after passing the exam (new pilot certificate: A1/A3 + A2 + STS, on one card).
10. Validity & refresher: the highest certificate determines the date; extension via refresh (UAS.STS-01/02).

What are STS-01 and STS-02?

Predefined, EU-wide accepted Standard Scenarios in the Specific Category. They define, among other things, the UAS type, max. altitude, max. distance, and operating area. Advantage: no individual approval per operation.

Difference STS-01 vs. STS-02

STS-01: VLOS, UAS up to 25 kg, Class C5, also in populated areas.
STS-02: BVLOS, Class C6, only in unpopulated areas; distance up to 1 km (without observer) or 2 km (with observer).

Training (Theory & Practical)

Two independent modules: Theory including exam online; Practical including exam on-site. A1/A3 is a prerequisite; A2 is not required (it is covered by STS if not held). Offers: Theoretical STS Training Offer · STS Practical Offer.

Permitted Drones

STS operations are only permitted with C5/C6. Other UAS: only OPEN or via individual approval (OM + SORA/PDRA at the LBA). EASA List C5/C6 (continuously updated).

Benefit of the STS License

EU-wide recognized proof of competence; supports individual applications (pilot training/qualification), recognized by the LBA as sufficient up to SAIL III; strengthens skills also for safe OPEN operations.

Document after Passing the Exam

New Remote Pilot Certificate in card format with A1/A3, A2, and STS in one document.

Theory/Practical in Different Centers?

Yes, possible. Theory alone does not entitle to EU STS flights, but can be used for individual approvals (ConOps).

Validity & Refresher

In combinations, the validity of the highest certificate applies (shown on the document according to AMC). Refreshers extend the STS certificate within the deadline (cf. UAS.STS-01.020(3)(b), UAS.STS-02.020(10)(b)). The LBA informs about changes, forms & procedures.

How to Properly Conduct STS Flights
