Geo Zones. The Nanny is on Break – Awareness and Personal Responsibility are Required!

Geofencing was deactivated with the new drone regulation on January 1, 2024. Now the pilot still receives information that they are flying into a sensitive Geo Zone, but the UAS is no longer blocked. What risk does this create?

In this article, you will learn:

1. Why pilots must check Geo Zones themselves – instead of relying on manufacturer information.
2. That entries like "Unlocking GEO Zones" still exist on DJI pages – which can be misleading.
3. Which risks arise in seconds: Air risk/zone violation, alert, U-Space disruption, accident.
4. Which consequences are imminent: from fine to imprisonment in extreme cases.
5. What has changed: no more technical blocking – only notifications/extended warning zones.
6. What matters now: Personal responsibility and prior check in Geo Zone apps/web such as dipul.de.
7. Why events (e.g., European Championship) and urban areas (e.g., helicopter landing pads) require special authorization.

Background: Responsibility instead of Autopilot

The goal of the measure is for pilots to actively check Geo Zones/flight zones. In practice, people often rely on manufacturer information or old internet sources – this is risky.

Deceptive Security

Hints like "Unlocking GEO Zones" can still be found on DJI service pages. Anyone relying on this may be surprised that an entry is indeed possible – exactly then it might already be too late.

Risks & Consequences

Possible consequences: Violation of air risk, zone violation, alerting the supervisory authority, accidents with aircraft/other UAS, U-Space disruptions, large-scale operations due to unauthorized flight – up to a fine or in extreme cases, imprisonment.

What Has Changed

There are no more hard-blocking warning/restriction/authorization/altitude zones. A notification appears that can be dismissed; sensitive areas (e.g., around prisons) are displayed as ** extended warning zones**. Technical barriers are gone – personal responsibility is here.

How to Check Correctly

First, use official Geo Zone sources (e.g., dipul.de), possibly the app/web of the responsible authorities. Manufacturer display is not sufficient.

Professionals vs. Beginners

For commercial users who check zones and obtain authorizations anyway, only the technical "unlocking" is eliminated. For the uninformed/beginners, the situation is critical – especially during events (e.g., European Championship) with temporary zones/warning levels.

City Flight & Lead Time

In cities, additional authorizations and lead time may be necessary (e.g., due to helicopter landing pads). Check this days in advance, not on the day of the flight.
