STS Flights – Requirements!

1) Suitable Drone: C5/C6

For STS, UAS with a passed conformity assessment are required: C5 for STS-01, C6 for STS-02. Note: A C5 drone can consist of a C3 drone with an upgrade kit.

2) Registration

You must be registered. Information and registration with the LBA (German Federal Aviation Office): LBA – UAS Registration.

3) Theory & Practical Training

Required are: A1/A3 competencies (OPEN), the STS theoretical exam, and complete practical training for the respective STS. A1/A3 online: LBA – Remote Pilot Requirements. Our theory training specifically prepares for STS (incl. certificate of attendance/curriculum). You complete the practical training with a Proof of Competency.

4) STS Exam & Dates

The STS theoretical exam must be taken at a recognized entity. You can find exam dates in our schedule: STS Exam Sessions.

5) UAS Operator & Operational Declaration

For the "all-inclusive package," you need an Operator (you can be the operator yourself). The operator organizes flights, submits notifications, and creates procedures/documents. An Operational Declaration must be submitted to the LBA for STS: LBA – STS Operational Declaration.

6) Operator Obligations

Take out liability insurance and create an Operations Manual (OM). LBA templates make the preparation easier: LBA – STS Templates/Manuals.

7) Summary

Provide C5/C6 UAS → Register → Complete A1/A3, STS Theory, Practical → Appoint operator → Submit Operational Declaration → File Insurance & OM. Then STS operations can be organized in compliance with regulations.
