In this article, you will learn:
1. How to register as a UAS operator with the LBA and attach the operator number.
2. Which categories (OPEN/SPECIFIC) and weight limits apply – focus on <250 g (Mavic Mini).
3. What options you have with Mini drones: without A1, with A1/A3, with A2, or SPECIFIC.
4. Which VLOS/120 m rules and CTR altitudes apply.
5. Why DJI Care (48 h) and Practical Training make sense.
6. Which duties exist before every flight (check, procedures, geo-zones).
7. That you, as the operator & pilot, are subject to air law regulations.
Registration with the LBA (UAS Operator Account)
Create an account at lba-openuav.de. You will receive an operator number (DE + 13 characters).
Operator Number on the Drone
Attach the number as a clearly legible sticker (e.g., P-Touch). A fireproof plaque is not required.

Legal Framework based on Take-Off Mass & Qualification
Mini (<250 g) in OPEN without A1
- VLOS (Visual Line of Sight).
- Flying over uninvolved persons is allowed, no crowds of people.
- Up to 120 m AGL (if geo-zone permits).
- No CTR (due to lack of authorization).
Mini (<500 g) in OPEN with A1/A3
Prerequisites: Read Mini manual, A1/A3 online course & exam (LBA).
- VLOS, not over uninvolved persons (brief overflying only minimally, if unavoidable).
- No crowds of people.
- Up to 120 m AGL (observe geo-zones).
- CTR: >1 km from the airfield boundary up to 30 m AGL; >6 km up to 100 m AGL.
In OPEN with A2 (all UAS up to 2 kg)
Prerequisites: A1/A3 valid, practical self-training A3 (declaration), preparation & A2 exam (30 questions).
- VLOS, ≥50 m horizontal distance from bystanders.
- No crowds of people.
- Up to 120 m AGL (observe geo-zones).
- CTR: >1 km up to 50 m AGL; >6 km up to 100 m AGL.
SPECIFIC (Special Category, beyond OPEN)
Create ConOps and submit it to the responsible aviation authority (details in relevant training courses).

Activate DJI Care (if purchased)
Activation within 48 hours after drone activation. Reduces repair costs – very useful for beginners.
Practice & Training
In addition to licenses, practical training (setup, mission preparation, safe operation) helps for a smooth start.
Duties Before Every Flight
- Pre-flight check according to manual.
- Flight preparation according to procedures/checklists.
- Geographical zones check (permission/CTR rules).
- Maintain VLOS, max. 120 m AGL.

Geo-Zones & Environment
Before every take-off, check airspace/CTR and surroundings (people, objects) and comply with all legal requirements – you are acting as both operator and pilot.
