ON-SITE Practice: STS.01 & STS.02 – (EU) / Specific Category

We recommend purchasing the STS-P practical training package together with the STS-T theoretical training. Only with STS-T and STS-P licences can you perform flights according to standard scenarios STS 01 (VLOS) and STS 02 (BVLOS)

We offer theoretical training in an online ‘Fast Track’ version. This allows participants to take the STS practical assessment with the STS-T licence they have obtained independently, planning their studies and learning at their own pace entirely online.

Self-directed learning with a test exam and many helpful videos is very well received and provides customers with regular and plannable training and exams. It also helps us to train groups more effectively in STS practice at our external training centres.

The European STS Scenario 01 permits drone flights up to an altitude of 120 meters within visual line of sight (VLOS) over populated areas within the European Union. This applies to drones that meet Class C5 requirements. In addition to the training, procedures must be followed, including those that depend on national regulations. The training is subject to EASA regulations.

The European STS Scenario 02 permits flight beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) over sparsely populated, controlled areas in the European Union. Flights can be conducted with Class C6 drones up to an altitude of 120 meters and a distance of 1 km (or 2 km when an observer is present). Flights may only be conducted with a minimum visibility of 5 kilometers. In addition to the STS 02 scenario, national regulations must also be observed. The training is subject to EASA regulations.

The practical training for STS 01/02 is based on EASA guidelines (in accordance with Article 4, Section A of European Commission Regulation 2019/947).

The training usually lasts 3–4 hours per candidate. However, depending on the candidate’s skills, the training may be shortened or extended.

Training:

Activities before the flight::

• Defining the flight objective
• Analyzing the topography of the area and surroundings
• Checking and preparing the equipment for flight
• Implementing safety measures
• Communication procedures in controlled airspace
• Reportable methods and the responsible authorities
• Emergency procedures

Activities during the flight:

• Orientation during flight
• Maneuvers such as hovering
• Turns and circles in level flight
• Speed control
• Emergency scenarios in VLOS and BVLOS
• Monitoring the status of the drone system
• Flights under special conditions in VLOS and BVLOS
• Safety training Fly & React

Activities after the flight:

• Shutting down and securing the drone
• Post-flight check and transfer of drone data
• Incident reporting

Exam / assessment STS 01/02 – VLOS/BVLOS

Practical flight exercises and maneuvers are conducted under the supervision of an examiner. If these tasks are performed correctly, the examiner confirms the candidate’s suitability for certification. The exercises adapt to the pilot’s skills, so each pilot receives an appropriate challenge.

The assessment refines the pilot’s flying skills and prepares them for special incidents during drone flight.

After passing the exam you will receive:

• An STS practical accreditation certificate for the scenarios STS 01 VLOS and STS 02 BVLOS, which will be sent digitally after the exam

A participant who successfully completes the course has:

• The required Specific category authorization for the standard STS 01 VLOS & STS 02 BVLOS scenarios (note: theoretical training is also required)
• The authorization that can be successfully used for training according to Part D in the Operations Manual (ConOps), which must be applied for together with the individual specific category flight authorization
• Important knowledge in the use of flight termination and assistance systems
• License privileges needed for flying in the Open category, especially in critical areas (if not already held)
• The knowledge, practice, and experience to carry out all drone operations safely
• Knowledge of procedures, regulations, and possible solutions to make drone flights faster, safer, and consistently legal
• Certificates that enhance the skills of drone pilots
• Additionally, you will receive the A2 EU drone license, if you do not already have it
